Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique believes Atletico Madrid will beat Man Utd in the Champions League knockout stages.
Man Utd booked their place in the knockout rounds of the competition as they earned top spot in Group F. They picked up three wins and two draws as they finished one point clear of La Liga side Villarreal.
Atletico Madrid only finished on seven points from their six games in Group B. They were beaten twice by Liverpool who took maximum points.
Diego Simeone’s side ended up two points and a place clear of Porto, who are now set to feature in the Europa League play offs.
Man Utd were initially drawn to face Villarreal in the last 16 of the competition. There had to be a redraw due to a technical issue.
The Red Devils will now play Atletico Madrid. As quoted by the Metro, Enrique has suggested that Simeone will make it “very difficult” for Man Utd:
“To be honest, Simeone has the best team in La Liga in terms of names, but Real Madrid with [Carlo] Ancelotti they are doing so well. I didn’t expect that. I expected Atletico to win the league this season because of the players they have,” Enrique said.
“But some of the players like Joao Felix. They have world class players, it’s not fitting into the way that Simeone wants to play.
“Everyone knows him and the way he wants to play. He’s as very defensive team, counter attacking, very annoying, hard working players.
“Obviously the team that he has now, he has hard working players but he also has quality players, even Luis Suarez Is not the Luis he used to be at Liverpool, at 35 you can’t ask him to work as hard as he was when he was younger, but this is normal.
“I think in the Champions League, Simeone is a very clever man so I actually believe that Atletico will beat Manchester United, and it is not because I don’t want United to win, that’s another reason.
“Simeone knows these games and it’s going to be very difficult for United, but at the same time they have someone called Cristiano Ronaldo that you know in any moment can change everything.”
